A Warning About Words
An opening note on the strange technology of words.
READER NOTE 000 · ORION SAINT
Do not mistake this book for paper and ink.
A screen can show you a thousand images and leave nothing behind.
A book asks you to create the image yourself.
When you read the word ocean, there is no ocean on this page. And yet—you can see it. You can hear it. You may even smell the salt.
Write coffee, and somewhere inside you a cup becomes warm. Write rain, and an old street may suddenly become wet again. Write the name of someone you once loved—and an entire world can return.
This is the strange technology of words.
